Minigame Review #7: The Pit
The Pit is the first-ever Hypixel infinite PVP game, and it struck the prototype lobby hard when it was released in late February of 2017. The goal is to kill other players, and survive in the interesting map divided into four sectors (one made of sky islands, one volcanic, one a mountain, and the final one is a waterfall zone), along with the center, which is often one of the busiest areas.
When you join a Pit game, you start inside a huge tree in the center of the map. You can drop down into the middle of the arena, or get launched to one of the four corners. The tree spans the whole map, its roots act as the boundaries between each sector.
When you get a kill or assist (or sometimes just for participation) you will gain gold and exp. After you gain a certain amount of exp, you level up! As for the gold, you can use it to buy perks and items.
If you reach level 120, you can 'Prestige' for 10K gold. That resets your exp and puts the Roman numeral one next to your name. On the second time you prestige, it replaces the one with a two, and so on, so on.
If someone is on a high kill streak, gold price tags start coming out of them. That's their bounty. Whoever kills them gets their bounty. Bounties can range from fifty gold to thousands of gold.
Another factor in the Pit are 'contracts.' Go up to the NPC who hands them out and buy one. They are something like: "collect 10 gold off the ground in five minutes," or "kill a bounty in five minutes." Some are harder than others. Winning a contract would result in a reward (gold) and losing one won't take anything away, except for the cost of the contract, and the five minutes you dedicated to completing it.
But wait, there's more! The Pit also has Events! There are two types of events: Minor, and Major. Minor events happen about every fifteen minutes, and include things like: a Care package: A chest that falls from the sky for someone to pick up, a King Of The Hill game: which is pretty self-explanatory, or Bounty: where everyone in the game gets a bounty placed on their head.
Major Events effect the game much more than Minor Events. Major Events actually change the rules of the game, and only happen about every hour. They include Rage Pit, a game where you can only go in the center, and all the other regions are blocked off. If players deal six thousand damage to one another in the five minutes that the game is on, everyone gets a reward. Team Death match is another event, and in it the players are divided into two groups: Blue and Red. After five minutes, whichever team gets the most kills wins a reward. One of the best events is the Beast. In it, someone becomes 'The Beast', and is buffed. Their goal is to survive long, and get kills. Whoever kills the beast becomes the beast.
Before you run off and try the Pit for yourself, you may want to read up on some tips and tricks:
Tips and Tricks
Eat Gapples!
Golden apples are awarded to you when you kill a player. Lots of people (myself included) foolishly 'save' the golden apple for when you're in mortal danger. Unfortunately, if you're in a battle and are low in health then try to eat the golden apple, that would not work out so well since there's someone rapidly hitting you. Once you get a golden apple, unless you're full on health, eat them right away!
Land In The Center
The center is (for the most part) the most dangerous area on the map. Once you drop down into it, people often swarm you and you die right away after frantic clicking (depending on how busy the game is). Although death is almost certain, the rewards can be rich: you may score many assists before you die (the assists keep coming after your own death: anyone you managed to hit may turn into an assist once they perish).
Shoot The Lava
If you land in the volcanic section, a great way to harvest kills is to stay in a hard-to-reach-spot (maybe on top of the tree root, or on the mountain) and wait or players to fall into lava. When they do, shoot them, and chances are they will die from your shot and (yay!) you will get a kill. Even if your shot did not kill them, you will still get an assist when they do burn to a crisp.
Don't Shoot In Mid-Air
As unfortunate as it is, if you try to shoot an arrow while being launched to one of the sectors, the arrow will not fire as planned. You can, however, charge up your bow while falling and shoot after you've landed. This is a strategy that many people will use to inflict damage on an opponent before they have a chance to react.
Arrows Are (for most people) Limited!
You only start with around thirty arrows, so use them wisely. Thirty may seem like a lot for a quick arena combat game, but it really isn't if your main strategy is to pick people off with a bow, or bow spam. Aim carefully, but don't be too conscious about your arrow stash since you can pick up more if you run out. If you really like using your bow, you can buy the perk (with gold) that gives you three arrows every time you shoot someone, basically giving you infinite arrows, assuming you have good aim.
Don't over-shop
Many people buy diamond armor and/or obsidian every time they play. Don't do it! And, if you do, don't drop to the center, where death is nearly inevitable and your gold will be wasted. Instead, try saving up for a perk (though there's no shame in buying items every so often).
Team!
For one of the first times on Hypixel, there's a game where teaming is allowed: The Pit. You are allowed to meet up with your friends in this game, and make new friends by helping strangers push others off a cliff into lava.#bonding!
Upgrade to heads!
You can get perks in 'The Pit', and those, if selected (you can select up to three), help you out a bit in game. One of the cheapest and most common perks is the 'Golden Heads' perk. It makes all the golden apples you receive turn into golden heads. Golden heads are equivalent to golden apples, but they are better, and can be eaten in a fraction of a second. This helps a lot for 'mid-battle healing'.
Not so Chatty?
Not in the mood to hear the dialogue of other noobs fighting, and the complements from others? You can do /pitchat to bring a menu up that lets you turn off player chat-letting you completely ignore everyone else, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.
Practice From Factions
The Pit is very similar to many arenas in Factions servers, so if you often play that long-term mini game the Pit may come easier to you. Of course, simply being skilled at PVP helps even more.

The inside of the tree, which is where you start.
The inside of the tree is pretty roomy. Perfect for a selfie.
With the Archer Perk, you can get three arrows every time you shoot someone. In this photo I currently have triple the starting amount in this photo, which really helps with getting kills and streaks.
